On one of our own...

I've been given the all-clear to notify SIG campers about this, and I figured there's no better way than to post here.  First, for those of you who don't know me, I'm Dan, the counselor who brought DDR to Vassar last summer.  No, I won't be back this year for a variety of reasons, but that's besides the point.

Anyway, I'm writing this post to clear up any confusion/rumors/fears about Gil Cnaan, aka skola, whom is universally recognized as a longtime fixture of SIG and someone who embodies what the program is all about.

As anyone who's kept track of Gil's LJ or has seen his away message knows, Gil's had health issues for the past couple months, due to congestive heart failure.  Right now he's at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and he will be there for the time being.  As of yesterday he's on the waiting list for a heart transplant.  The wait could be a matter of days or months.

Now, on to confirming some things:

Gil will not be a counselor at SIG Vassar this year - TRUE.  Even if Gil were to recieve a new heart tomorrow and complete the recovery period, it would be unfair to expect him to perform in his full or even reduced capacity as a SIG counselor.  He would like to assure everyone that, health willing, he intends to visit the Vassar campus during the summer, and will hopefully return as a counselor in 2006.

Gil is going to die - FALSE.  Gil is alive and well kicking and intends to make a full recovery.

Gil is too sick to see visitors - again, FALSE.  If there's anything Gil wants, it's the love and prayers and support of his friends.  He's not on life support, he's fully capable of talking to people, and nothing would make him feel better than recieving contact from his SIG flock.  You can find directions to the HUP here.  We'll do our best to help people who want to take the train in to visit, but contact one of us ahead of time.

That said, there's one thing he's requested an abundance of, and that's laughter: Books, movies (DVD or VHS), toys, games, whatever - I'm sure you all know what makes Gil tick and can come up with something appropriate.  If you don't know what to get but want to chip in some money, send a PayPal payment to dokool[at] with an indication that it's for Gil and I'll make sure it goes towards something he'll appriciate.

As far as an address, I'm not going to post that info here - please contact me at dokool[at] or AIM: DOKool for that.  Please do not send stuff to the hospital - I have a feeling that if half of all of Gil's friends sent things to HUP the system would get severly backed up.  If you want to bake cookies or anything like that, that's cool, but please keep it low on sodium as per his current medical restrictions.

Finally, Gil would like to ask for your (multi-denominational) prayers and sends messages of love, peace, sunshine, and so on and so forth.  He further asks that if you feel like taking a more active role in procuring a heart, that you should leave the body (of similar height and build to Gil himself, procured via blunt force trauma to the head only! Please leave the cutting implements at home) outside of the HUP main entrance with a note reading 'Organ Donor' attached.

Thank you, and please feel free to contact me (through the methods noted above) with any questions.
